It can happen to anyone. Here’s a checklist to keep you prepared.
Every time you get behind the wheel, you risk the possibility of a car crash. Odds are you’ll reach your destination safely—but if you’re involved in an accident, it’s important that you know what to do.
If you’re not in immediate danger, take a moment to collect yourself. Being calm will help you manage the post-crash process better.
Check on others involved in the crash to see if they are injured. If anyone needs medical attention, call 911 immediately.
If possible, move your vehicle to a safe place off the road and turn on your hazard lights. Do not leave the scene of the crash. If the other driver flees, here’s what to do after a hit-and-run accident.
If the police don’t come to the scene, file an accident report at a police station or with another law enforcement agency as soon as possible.
Exchange information with everyone involved, including witnesses. This will help your insurance claim process go as smoothly as possible.
The sooner you make your insurer aware of the accident, the sooner they can start the claim process.
