The Ultimate Road Trip Planner
Revive a great American summer tradition and take your family on a vacation they’ll never forget.
Summers were made for family road trips. The only question is where to go. You could start with some of the most popular journeys, such as California’s Pacific Coast Highway, Route 66, the East Coast-spanning U.S. Route 1 or the Blue Ridge Parkway. Get inspiration from more than 500 possibilities with the pre-planned AAA Road Trips.
Or maybe you’d like to try something a bit different, like taking a tour linking state capitals, historic military sites or national parks, or mapping out a drive built around a lineup of major league baseball stadiums. Members can take advantage of the online map gallery before heading out.
Wherever you’re headed, you can use your AAA Membership to enhance your adventure. In addition to looking at some of our favorite places to visit, here are some great resources that will help you make the most out of every moment on the road.
Use AAA TripTiks and AAA TourBook Guides to pin down important travel details.
You can use TripTiks to find gas stations, points of interest and maps; to reference saved trips; and even to schedule two-hour driving breaks.
The iconic AAA TourBook Guides that countless travelers have relied on for expert advice and insight are now digital. With just a few taps, you can access interactive maps, city guides and videos that can help you plan your trip for maximum enjoyment. You can also access both of these resources on your AAA Mobile app.
Go mobile for roadside assistance and much more.
The AAA Mobile app can provide AAA recommended road trips, which are divided by region and include specific driving routes. If find you need to rent a car, book hotel rooms, or purchase travel insurance, you can do these things easily in the app.
While on the road, use the mobile app to access the TripTiks Travel Planner under Map Your Route to find nearby restaurants, hotels and gas stations. Or use the Near Me feature to find the closest and cheapest gas as well as electric vehicle charging stations. You can find hotels and restaurants in this section, too.
With the app, you can also search for nearby activities, many of which have AAA Discounts & Rewards. Activate AAADrive to gamify your safe driving while on the road.* And if you ever need it, you can use the app to request AAA Roadside Assistance, as well as track your technician’s route and your wait time.
Make your miles per gallon go further.
A few tips for getting the most miles from your fill-up:
- Check your tires. Improperly inflated tires (no matter how new) can decrease fuel economy.
- Drive the speed limit. Excessive speed burns more fuel.
- Remove unused roof racks and carry as light a load as possible. An aerodynamic shape helps to maximize miles per gallon.
- When you do need a fill-up, remember you can save 5 cents per gallon at Shell with the Fuel Rewards program .**
Find and share new experiences.
Part of the fun of a summer road trip is sharing your experiences with others. Now you can do it with XPWow, an app that helps you locate and share activities around the U.S.
Use the app to find video ideas, or wows, of interesting outdoor experiences and activities, and create your own wows to share with others. Maybe it’s a river to fish, a can’t-miss small-town festival or a scenic backwoods trail that must be explored.
Save miles by renting a ride.
Thinking about giving your regular ride a rest and putting those summer getaway miles on a rental car instead? Enjoy exclusive rates and benefits, like a free additional driver and child safety seat use, when you rent with AAA partners Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty.
Take your bikes along.
If bike riding is part of your road trip plan, we have good news: Five states have recently added 18 new bike routes (about 3,000 miles) to the U.S. Bicycle Route System, a network of officially recognized travel paths across the country. Among the most interesting new routes are those in Everglades National Park in Florida and Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the Tennessee/North Carolina border. (Use TripTiks to map your bike routes!)
Should you encounter bike trouble along the way, AAA Bicycle Service is roadside assistance for cyclists, and it’s included with your AAA Membership.
